Targeting Contacts with Tags

Tags are a powerful way to segment your contacts for targeted campaigns. Instead of broadcasting to all contacts, you can send messages to specific groups based on tags you define.

Creating Tags

Tags can be created and managed in two ways:

• From the Contacts page — Add tags while viewing or editing a contact
• From Campaign creation — Create new tags inline when setting up targeting
• Via automation — Use flows or automations to tag contacts based on their behavior

Using Tags in Campaigns

When creating a campaign, you can choose to target:

• All Contacts — Send to everyone in your directory
• Specific Tags — Send only to contacts with selected tags
• Multiple Tags — Contacts matching any of the selected tags (OR logic)

Best Practices for Tagging

• Create tags based on customer segments (e.g., "vip", "new", "returning")
• Use tags for interest categories (e.g., "product-a", "service-b")
• Tag contacts based on lifecycle stage (e.g., "lead", "active", "churned")
• Regularly clean up unused tags to keep your tag list manageable
• Use the custom attributes field for complex data that doesn't fit a tag structure

Contact Attributes

Beyond tags, each contact has a custom attributes JSON field for arbitrary data. You can store anything here — order history, preferences, custom IDs — and use it for personalizing template messages.
